Bluebonnet hosting wild land fire preparedness field day at its Bastrop Headquarters

Bluebonnet will host a free wildfire preparedness field day for members, area residents and nonprofit organizations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the co-op’s headquarters property, 155 Electric Ave., off Texas Highway 21 East in Bastrop.

Several organizations from across the region will showcase their fire-safety information and environmental efforts at the event, including the Texas A&M Forest Service, Bastrop County Office of Emergency Management, Bastrop County Tourism and Economic Development, Lost Pines Master Naturalists and Keep Bastrop County Beautiful. There will be activities for kids, including a visit from Smokey Bear, the U.S. Forest Service’s mascot.

The free event will demonstrate ways to make your home or office safer from wildfire, including examples of how Bluebonnet made changes to its headquarters property following recommendations by the Texas Forest Service. Michal Hubbard, Bluebonnet’s coordinator for community education, will offer information about wildfire mitigation and creating defensible space around homes or offices. Attendees can also enter a drawing to win an assortment of landscaping tools.
