BLUEBONNET MEMBERS CHOOSE THREE INCUMBENTS AND ONE NEW DIRECTOR AT ANNUAL MEETING

Bluebonnet Members Choose Three Incumbents and One New Director at Annual Meeting
Bastrop – Bluebonnet’s members elected three incumbents and one new director at their annual meeting to help the cooperative face the challenges of changing technology and explosive growth.
“This election is an example of how successful the democratic process is among cooperatives, particularly Bluebonnet,” said Rick Schmidt, Bluebonnet board president. “Our members chose three current directors and one new one whom they believe are most qualified to help us meet the challenges we know are coming.
“With two out of the last three elections resulting in turnover, the board now has a good mix of veteran directors and directors who bring different experiences and new ideas to the table. As a group, we are stronger now than ever before,” Schmidt said.
The three incumbents re-elected were Ben Flencher, representing Burleson County, 5,796 votes; Lyle Wolz, representing Burleson County, 5,829 votes; and Ken Mutscher, representing Washington County, 6,125 votes.
Milton Shaw, of Caldwell County, outpaced George Kehler, of Lee County, for the fourth board seat. Shaw received 5,573 votes.
Shaw, a native of Luling, spent 30 years with Shell Oil before he retired to his hometown 12 years ago. Since then, he has been active in civic activities and community organizations in Central Texas. He and his wife, Judy, own a cattle and hay-bailing business.
“I feel honored to be elected to serve on the board at Bluebonnet,” Shaw said. “At one time electricity was considered a luxury, now it is a necessity. I am very excited about working with the board of directors and Mark Rose to provide Bluebonnet’s members with reliable electricity at a reasonable price.”
In addition to electing directors during Bluebonnet’s annual meeting, members heard reports from James Kershaw, board secretary-treasurer, and Schmidt. Matt Bentke, Bluebonnet’s chief operating officer, gave a presentation on the co-op’s financial and operational strengths. Mark Rose, Bluebonnet’s general manager and chief executive officer, also highlighted the co-op’s smart grid program and how members could use it to monitor their energy usage and save money.
Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative is one of the largest electric cooperatives in Texas and has been serving its members since 1939. Bluebonnet serves 80,000 meters and owns and maintains 11,000 miles of power lines, located across more than 3,800 square miles within 14 Central Texas counties. Bluebonnet’s service area stretches from Travis County to Washington County and from Milam County down to Gonzales County.
